Original Driving Licence

What you need to know
A driving licence is a permit that authorises an individual to drive / operate a vehicle or motor cycle on the road. There are several categories of driving licences, namely:
Class "E" – allows a driver to drive light vehicles only.
Class "B,C and E" – allows driver to drive both light vehicles and heavy commercial vehicles.
Class "I" – This is a special licence that incorporates authority to drive
articulated motor vehicles, prime movers, fork lifts, shovels, e.t.c
Following are the requirements for obtaining a driving licence

  • The applicant must be over 18 years of age when applying for a motor vehicles driving licence, and over 16 years of age when applying for a motor cycle licence.
  • Copy of National Identity card and two recent passport size photographs of the applicant.
  • Duly filled Form VII obtained from the Road Transport Department offices or the District Commissioners offices.
  • The applicant must have leant how to drive at a registered driving school.
  • The applicant must also undergo a driving test examination that is conducted by driving test examiners (police officers)

A successful applicant is issued with a Drivers Certificate of Competency endorsed in respect of class for which the test has been taken.
The applicant is required to pay a prescribed fee at the Road Transport Department offices or any District Commissioners Office. An interim Driving License is issued to the applicant while waiting for the actual driving license

Provisional Driver’s Licence

Another Provisional driver’s is purchased for Kshs. 500/=

NOTE:
It is important to indicate on this form the licence number, year the licence was issued and correct Order of names used.

Where the reference of the licence is known, one should wait at the counter for 1 hour awaiting approval of the application to enable payment.

However a delay of 2 days is unavoidable where the applicant does not know the reference.

Lost Driving Licence

  1. Application Form XI
  2. Police Abstract and the Kshs 20/= receipt
  3. Two Passport size photographs of the applicant
  4. Photocopy of the ID
  5. Payable fees of Kshs. 875/=.

Defaced Driving Licence

  • Application Form XI
  • The Defaced Licence
  • Two Passport size photographs of the applicant
  • Photocopy of the ID
  • Payable fees of Kshs 875/= if the licence has less than 3 months expiry period or Kshs.375/= if the expiry period has more than three months.
